Proteolytic Enzymes to the Rescue

rawr life proteolytic enzymes

What are proteolytic enzymes?

They are a group of chemical compounds that break down protein in foods to smaller amino acids to be utilized by the body. The human body makes these enzymes through the pancreas and stomach. These enzymes help with protein digestion, blood clotting, cell division, and immune function. Our body makes these enzymes and we can also consume certain plants and natural dietary supplement sources that contain proteolytic enzymes.

What are the health benefits of proteolytic enzymes?

A lack of proper proteolytic enzyme function can cause fibrin clotting factors to build in the blood. This may reduce proper blood flow, increase blood pressure, and even cause clots to form. The increase in fibrin also increases the cytokines (peptides) that cause inflammation in our body.

Are there any precautions with proteolytic enzymes?

Like anything, too much of a good thing can cause side effects.  If while taking proteolytic enzyme supplements you notice nausea, headache, or vomiting, then you may need to back off and always consult with your doctor. Usually consuming plant based foods that naturally contain proteolytic enzymes is safer and can be more effective than single supplementation. Some superfood products also naturally contain them in food form.

Can eating plant based foods that contain proteolytic enzymes be helpful?

Yes. Papaya (papain) and pineapple (bromelain) naturally contain these proteolytic enzymes. Eating these foods can be helpful, and using superfood blends that contain papain and/or bromelain is also effective.
