What is Acid Reflux?

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux is when stomach acid or bile (produced in liver and stored in the gallbladder) flows up into the small intestine and food pipe. This then irritates that food pipe, or esophagus. This creates the burning sensation felt in the throat and gross taste in the mouth.

Is chronic acid reflux dangerous?

We’ve all experienced acid reflux at one time or another, but chronic acid reflux can damage tissue and even promote cancer. With a chronic disorder like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux) the sphincter becomes ruined causing it to relax which then causes an easier means for the stomach acid, and even food, to makes its way up or reflux.

How do we prevent acid reflux?

To reduce acid reflux one would eat smaller meals more frequently, elevate the upper body at night, eat earlier in the evening, and reduce fatty foods and smoking.  Also, eating foods less acidic may help. Research has also suggested that by chewing gum it can help release more bicarbonate (higher pH) into the saliva and create more frequent swallowing of the higher pH saliva helping neutralize the acid. Consuming healthy green vegetables within larger meals may also help neutralize too much acid.
